Scarpa Golden Gate ATR 2 Multi Tester Review: Door to Trail Perfection? 6 Comparisons

Article by Mike Postaski, Renee Krusemark, and Sam Winebaum

Scarpa Golden Gate ATR 2 ($169)

Introduction

Sam: The Golden Gate ATR 2, Scarpa's door to trail sees a dramatic and positive update to its first version. It moves from a kind of clunky stiff and lumbering shoe to an agile quick door to trails option at a lighter weight of 9.2 oz / 261g  (-40g /1.45 oz), lower stack height of 28mm heel 24 mm forefoot (-4mm) and has more dynamic foams. It leans more trails than some of its competitors such as the Pegasus Trail 5 and Saucony TR2 and that is a good thing for those whose trails after those roads are.. more than park paths or gravel roads.

Testbericht: New Balance FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v3: 3 Vergleiche (German)

Artikel von Markus Zinkl

FuelCell SuperComp Trainer v3 (250,00 €)

ANTA G21 Review: 3 Comparisons

Article by Derek Li

ANTA G21 ( S$139, about US$100)

The ANTA G21 is probably not a shoe many people are familiar with. In the Chinese domestic market, it’s actually called Guan Jun, which means champion, and the shoe is already on version 3.

For all intents and purposes, this shoe is being marketed as a moderately cushioned, neutral daily trainer.

Key statistics

  • Measured stack 40mm heel -32mm forefoot

  • 258g in US9.5

  • Retail is currently at S$139 which is about US$100

Pros

  • Smooth, natural transitions

  • Good outsole performance

Cons

  • None!

Tecnica Pyrox Hybrid Review: What a Sweet Ride! 4 Comparisons

Article by Sam Winebaum

Tecnica Pyrox Hybrid (155€, USD to be announced)

Introduction

UTMB 2025 saw the introduction of several 2025 releasing trail shoes and one that caught my eye (it looks great), and which has delighted me on the run most is the Tecnica Pyrox Hybrid. It’s a door to trail type shoe which will be joined by a similar more trail focused Pyrox Explore in 2025.

Of course, it has a cheery and colorful vibe but  what really adds to the fun is the 2 supercritical foams midsole of PEBAX and EVA. Instead of stacking the foam super high, it goes with a  lower stack 28 mm heel 24mm forefoot and a very broad on the ground platform.

It includes  “impulso 4D” geometry which seeks to deal with both vertical forces as well as terrain and stride adapting horizontal and diagonal ones by reducing friction in each foot strike.

This increases flexibility and stability while delivering a nimble, very energetic ride. It works and really well on both trail and road.

Teva Aventrail Multi Tester Review: The Best do Anything Sports Sandal Ever?

Article by Jeff and Allison Valliere

Teva Aventrail ($145)

The Aventrail is a purpose built sandal aimed at the trail running crowd, with a more supportive, comfortable upper (straps with additional engineered mesh for comfort/support), a deeply cushioned Hyper-Comf midsole that combines the response of super critical foams with supportive EVA to provide great all around cushioning.

Teva is under the Deckers/Hoka umbrella and to quickly summarize, the Aventrail is a Hoka running sandal.  They have become our favorite sandals, read on to discover why, and yes they do have their limits on the run but otherwise we both thought they are the best sandals we have ever worn..

Hoka Mach X 2 Multi Tester Review: 8 Comparisons

Article by Sam Winebaum, Renee Krusemark, Michael Ellenberger, and Peter Stuart

Hoka Mach X 2 ($190)

Introduction

Sam: The Mach X  is Hoka’s  lightweight bif cushion uptempo trainer to racer.  Hoka’s marketing headline for the Mach X 2 is “Everyday Miles, Elevated”. I agree, as long as those daily miles are on the faster side. Hoka has plenty of other “daily” max cushion plated that are more mellow riding including Skyflow and Skyward X. See my comparative review which also includes mach X2 and Cielo X 1 here

For the X2 edition, we see an increase of 5 mm in stack height of PEBA top foam (the EVA layer below remains the same)  to a super max level of  44mm at the heel . At the same time, weight drops to race shoe levels to about 8.5 oz / 241g US9. Its plate continues as a plastic PEBAX Renew but it is redesigned with stabilizing winglets and more flex, although it remains a mostly rigid rocker snappy flex type shoe.

Black Diamond Beta Light 30 Backpack Multi Tester Review: 7 Comparisons

Article by Markus Zinkl and Sam Winebaum

Beta Light 30 Backpack ($369.95)

Introduction

Markus: The Black Diamond Beta Light 30 Backpack is, as far as I know, the first pack from a big brand, which uses a more rare ultralight fabric like Challenge Sailcloth Ultra. It is designed for those who need to cover long distances quickly and with its running style shoulder straps would count it into the fast packing category. I was really excited to test this pack out and compare it to the other packs I reviewed, which mostly come from smaller cottage companies.

Sam: The Beta Light is my first ultralight backpacking pack although I have previously trekked with the Ultimate Direction Fastpack 40. My testing included an 8 day trek in the Queyras region of the French Alps and a 2 day hike the White Mountains of New Hampshire both with moderate loads as we were hut to hut hiking.

In the article, I test Tracksmith's updated Harrier Tee now with 37.5 temperature and odor regulating tech on top of its already high performing Merino blend fabric, the updated Session Shorts now with 4 pockets and a new brief and the Tracksmith Hat.

All smiles for me with this classy high performance kit!

Testbericht: Tracksmith Strata Shirt & Half Tights (German)

Artikel von Nils Scharff

Strata Tee (155€) & Strata Half Tights (180€)

Hoka 2024 Max Cushion Trainer/Racer Reviews and Comparisons : Skyflow, Skyward X , Mach X 2, and Cielo X 1

Article by Sam Winebaum

Skyflow ($160), Skyward X ($225) , Mach X 2 ($190), Cielo X 1 ($275)

Hoka the max cushion pioneer has in the last year released 4 max cushion trainers with 3 of them also certainly race capable. All have supercritical foams with 3 having plates. All have heel heights at 40mm or higher so, regardless of choice, there is plenty of cushion here.

Skyflow: the only unplated, the least expensive at $160, very stable at all paces

Skyward X: the highest stacked at 46mm, the broadest platform, the heaviest and most stable

Mach X 2: the lightest at 8.5 oz / 241g US9 , the most nimble and quickest feeling

Cielo X 1: a deluxe plush racer to trainer with the highest price ($275)

Each is quite distinct in its ride and purpose. In the article we will try to sort out their differences, strengths, weaknesses and best uses.

I have 2 clear favorites here, but each for different reasons.
